Cardiovascular Fitness for Firefighters

notes from a presentation by Matt Byers, Phoenix Fire Health Symposium

Cardio Vascular Disease is the #1 killer of Firefighters!

From 1994 to 2004, 39% (449) of FF line of duty deaths were caused by CVD.

Physical activity is the most prevalent modifiable risk factor for CVD in the US.

Factors that contribute to the problem are:

    • smoke and chemical exposure

    • irregular physical exertion

    • handling of heavy equipment and materials

    • heat stress

    • shift work

    • a high prevalence of CV risk factors

    • psychological stressors

What changes will address the problem?

Accountability

    • with the Fire Department

    • with each member
